Since 1996, the Urban Ministry Center has partnered with congregations of many faiths to open their facilities to provide shelter and food for homeless people during the winter months. Each site offers a warm and safe place to sleep, serves three meals (dinner, breakfast and a brown bag lunch) and then returns guests the following morning to uptown Charlotte.
The program is a unique way for people of faith to become directly involved in the lives of people who are homeless. While the program ensures protection from the cold during winter months for our homeless friends, the greater goal is to provide support and ministry to our homeless guests and a deeper understanding of the depth and complexity of homelessness for our volunteers.
We host Room in the Inn guests at Light of Christ 3 Fridays per month, December through March. We need volunteers to help us with care for our homeless neighbors. We provide a warm and safe place to sleep, three meals (dinner, breakfast and a brown bag lunch), hospitality and prayer during the cold winter months.
